I Deleted 15GB of Screenshots Using EXIF Data
My screenshot folder had become a digital hoarder\x27s paradise. EXIF metadata helped me clean house in a way that sorting by hand never could.
I have a confession: I take screenshots like a man being paid by the screenshot. Error messages? Screenshot. Confusing Twitter thread? Screenshot. A particularly good deal on Amazon that I want to think about for three weeks before not buying? You better believe that's a screenshot.
My desktop at any given time looks like a digital war crime. And the worst part? My actual photo library had about 4GB of real photos. My screenshot folder had 15. Something had to give.
The Problem With Manual Sorting
I tried cleaning up the old-fashioned way. Opening each screenshot, deciding its fate, deleting or filing it. After about 45 screenshots, I wanted to throw my laptop out the window. There were thousands of files. Screenshots of Slack messages from 2019. Screenshots of memes that weren't funny anymore. Screenshots of code snippets that were now outdated — some from projects I didn't even work on anymore.
I needed a smarter approach. And that's when I remembered: every screenshot has a secret. It's called EXIF data.
EXIF: Not Just for Cameras
Most people think EXIF data is only for photos taken with a camera — the stuff that records aperture, shutter speed, GPS coordinates, and whether you used a flash. But screenshots have metadata too. The date and time the screenshot was taken. The dimensions. The file format. And crucially, on MacOS at least, screenshots created by Cmd+Shift+4 have predictable naming patterns: Screenshot 2023-04-12 at 14.32.15.png.
I pulled up our EXIF viewer and started digging. I sorted by creation date. Then by dimensions. Then by file size. Patterns emerged.
Old work screenshots (2019-2021): Most were 1440x900 or similar. These were from a previous job, on a previous laptop. Did I need them? No. I hadn't opened a single one in three years. Deleted. Poof. 6GB gone.
Mid-quality memes (2022-2023): These were all 750x1334 or similar iPhone-resolution crops. Most of them were jokes I'd already forgotten. I made myself laugh at one, decided that was enough, and yeeted the rest. 4GB gone.
Code error screenshots (eternity): These were the ones that hurt. Every single one was an error message I'd screenshot "just in case." I keep telling myself I'll organize them into some kind of personal knowledge base. I never do. But I couldn't bring myself to delete them.
So I compromised: I kept the ones from 2025 and 2026 (about 200 of them) and deleted everything older. Another 3GB gone.
The Result
Fifteen gigabytes. Freed up in about an hour. Not by looking at each screenshot, but by using metadata to make bulk decisions. I found screenshots from a job I quit four years ago. Screenshots of websites that don't even exist anymore. A screenshot of a text message from my ex that, honestly, I'm glad I deleted.
If your screenshot folder is a disaster zone like mine was, don't do it manually. Use the EXIF viewer, sort by date or dimensions, and be ruthless. Future you — with all that free hard drive space — will throw a parade in your honor.
