Is Your Environment Too Loud? How I Measure Noise Levels
I started measuring noise levels with a decibel meter app when I couldn\x27t concentrate at home. What I found changed how I set up my workspace — and my expectations for peace and quiet.
I live on a street that I would politely describe as "lively." There's a construction site two blocks away that has been in the "almost done" phase for approximately eleven months. There's a neighbor who believes his subwoofer is a personality trait. There are dogs, delivery trucks, and at least one person who honks their car horn as a form of greeting. It's a lot.
For a long time, I just accepted this as background suffering. Living in a city means noise. That's the deal. But I kept noticing that I was exhausted by 11 AM, not from work, but from the constant low-grade stress of sound I couldn't control. So I decided to do something I should have done years earlier: I measured it.
I downloaded a free decibel meter app on my phone. Not a professional one — I'm not an acoustic engineer. Just an app that uses the phone's built-in microphone to give you a rough reading in decibels. And I started taking measurements at different times of day, in different rooms of my apartment, just to see what the numbers looked like.
The results were revealing. My living room, which I'd always thought of as tolerably quiet, registered at around 45 dB during the day. That's about the level of a quiet conversation or a running refrigerator. But it spiked to 55-60 dB multiple times an hour — car doors, delivery trucks, that dog. Those spikes were the problem. The baseline was fine. The unpredictability was what was wearing me down.
Here's what I learned about decibel levels and what they actually mean.
30 dB is a whisper. A library. If you're lucky enough to have a room that measures this, treasure it. Most people don't.
40-50 dB is a quiet room. Normal conversation. Refrigerator hum. Light traffic in the distance. This is where most homes sit, and it's fine for most work.
50-60 dB is moderate noise. A busy office. A running dishwasher. Light street traffic. You can concentrate here, but it takes more effort, and over time it'll tire you out.
60-70 dB is loud. A vacuum cleaner. A television at normal volume. A busy restaurant. This is where sustained concentration becomes genuinely difficult. If your workspace is regularly at this level, you're fighting a losing battle.
Above 70 dB? That's a problem. Prolonged exposure can cause hearing damage. It's also nearly impossible to do focused work.
The World Health Organization recommends keeping average noise levels below 35 dB for optimal sleep and 55 dB for outdoor living areas. Most of us are way over that.
Here's what I did after I got my measurements.
First, I identified the worst times of day. For me, 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM were the loudest, thanks to traffic and neighbor activity. I started scheduling my deep-focus work for 10 AM to 12 PM, when the readings were consistently lowest.
Second, I addressed the biggest single offender. That was a drafty window that let in more street noise than I realized. A heavy curtain — the kind meant for blackout purposes — cut my peak measurements by 8-10 dB. It wasn't a miracle, but it was meaningful.
Third, I started using a decibel meter as feedback, not judgment. The goal wasn't to achieve silence. That's impossible in a city. The goal was to understand my environment so I could work with it instead of against it.
I still hear the construction. I still hear the subwoofer. But now I know the actual numbers behind the annoyance. And knowing — having actual data — somehow makes it feel less overwhelming. It's not just "noise." It's 58 dB of noise. And I can plan around that.
