Play the "guess the scale" game enough times, and the patterns become permanently embedded in your brain. What I love about this approach is how portable it is. I don't need to be sitting at a piano. I can visualize scales on the bus, while I'm waiting in line, during a boring meeting. I've got twelve major scales memorized now, not because I practiced them on an instrument, but because I learned them as mental shapes. And here's the biggest surprise: when I finally sat down at a real piano — a friend's — I could already play scales. My fingers didn't know the fingering, but my brain knew the pattern. I just had to find the starting note and follow the shape in my head. It took about ten minutes to map the mental pattern onto the physical keys. The instrument doesn't matter. The theory matters.
